100g (3.5 oz) Black Wensleydale locks/fleece

This is very clean, hand sorted by me personally from raw fleece. You may find the odd bit of vegetable matter/straw but this will be minimal as I make every effort to remove it for you.  These locks of 8 - 12 inches are very dark with lighter brown weathered ends.

You can order any amount that you would like, but I have kept the order on this website to three amounts for ease.  1.9kg (4.1llb) is the most economical for postage.  However, this listing is for a sample pack of 100g - or perhaps for a smaller project.

We are a working farm, we keep rare breed Wensleydales and Bluefaced Leicesters, black and white, for wool exclusively.

Depending on the time of year that you purchase your fleece you will find different textures and colours.  Once the fleece has been off the sheep’s back for a number of months, your locks may feel wet but I would like to remind you that this is the lanolin which has been absorbed into the fleece.  This is healthy for the sheep, so if my locks feel heavy with grease then I am happy!

Also, please remember that your fleece is raw, meaning unwashed, and this process is now up to you.  There are several ways to wash your fleece, but if you are unsure then feel free to email me.  Whilst I have tried to remove most of the farm ‘rubbish’ – you will still find some vegetation – including hay.  I am afraid that hay is very hard to remove from the fleece – but my sheep and their welfare and health come first and therefore during winter months I do feed hay and haylage to my sheep and I do not coat them.

Most of my fleece is sent to Yorkshire for spinning into balls of wool and you can see my wool on the store page of my website.  This fleece has usually left our farm at the beginning of August - so if you would like to buy larger quantities of fleece then June is the best time to place your order.  But don’t worry too much – I currently have 500 sheep!

Our sheep are in prime condition, with their nutrition closely monitored to avoid any wool-breaks. As you can imagine, opting for professional shearers, weighing the sheep monthly and feeding every lamb twice daily for the first year, is an expensive task.

This means we are unable to offer large discounts but we will offer some discounts on larger orders.

Put simply - happy sheep give the best fleeces and therefore the best yarn and cutting corners gives average ones! These values are behind everything we do.

And finally, my website may not give you the best postage option for larger quantities.  I will always refund any postage difference or send you a pro-forma invoice in advance.
